“THE COURTESAN” It is the story of a young courtesan devoted to luxury and pleasures of the flesh. However, this dissolute life was not good for her physical and especially mental health to the point of being removed from society and treated in a psychiatric ward. “LA MARCHESA” Milan, 1913 This is the tragic story of a marquise who, accustomed to comfort and wealth, was the trendsetter in the Milanese upper middle class of the early twentieth century. One day she fell from grace as a gambling addict, thus ruining her wealth and reputation. In the early twentieth century, the role of women was still very much confined to the home: those who did not submit to the decisions of men were considered hysterical to the point of being hospitalized in a psychiatric ward.
